Why do designs use white space?
Short answer
White space separates pieces of information, makes important elements easier to find, and improves readability. An apparently empty area can still communicate the structure of a design.
How it works
When text and images are too close together, it becomes difficult to tell which elements belong together. Space between them makes the boundary between related and separate information easier to see.
White space does not have to be white. A colored or patterned background can still function as white space when it surrounds the main elements and gives the eye room to rest.

More white space is not always better. Good design balances the amount of information and the spacing for the purpose and the size of the screen.
