Why do elevators have counterweights?
The short answer
A counterweight balances much of the elevator car's weight, so the motor needs less force to move it.
How it works
The car and counterweight are connected by ropes over pulleys and move in opposite directions. Passengers change the balance, so the motor moves the difference.

The counterweight can save energy and make acceleration and braking easier to control.
