Why do we get goosebumps?
The short answer
The autonomic nervous system contracts tiny muscles at hair roots, raising hairs and making bumps on the skin.
How it works
In furry animals, raised hair can trap air or make them look larger. Humans have less hair, so the warming effect is small.
A familiar example
Strong emotion, such as surprise or music, can also cause goosebumps.
