Why do we breathe?
The short answer
We breathe to bring in oxygen for cells to release energy from food and to remove the carbon dioxide produced.
How it works
In the lungs, oxygen crosses thin air-sac walls into the blood. Carbon dioxide moves from the blood into the lungs and leaves when we exhale.
A familiar example
Breathing becomes faster and deeper during exercise because muscles use more energy.
