Why do we sneeze?
The short answer
When the nasal lining senses irritation, a nerve reflex coordinates muscles in the chest and throat to force air outward.
How it works
Sneezing is a cleaning reflex, but droplets can spread. Covering the nose and mouth with a tissue or elbow reduces that spread.
A familiar example
Some people sneeze in response to bright light or temperature changes as well as dust.
