Why does warm air rise?
The short answer
Warm air expands and becomes less dense, so surrounding cooler air pushes it upward.
How it works
Rising air transfers heat and eventually cools, weakening the motion. This circulation is called convection and also occurs in rooms and the atmosphere.
A familiar example
Water circulating in a heated pot is another example of convection caused by temperature differences.
