Why do magnets attract iron?

A magnet attracts iron because its magnetic field can align tiny magnetic regions inside the iron.
How it works
Iron contains regions where atomic magnetism points in the same direction. Normally these regions are mixed, but a nearby magnet aligns some of them and creates attraction.
A familiar example
An iron paper clip moves toward a magnet, while wood and paper do not respond in the same way.
