Why do objects fall?
The short answer
Earth's mass creates gravity that pulls objects toward its center, so an unsupported object moves downward.
How it works
With little air resistance, heavy and light objects fall with the same gravitational acceleration. A feather falls slowly mainly because air resistance affects it strongly.
A familiar example
In a vacuum, a coin and a sheet of paper dropped together reach the floor at nearly the same time.
